Adam Black, Coller Capital
Adam Black
Partner, Head of ESG and Sustainability
Coller Capital

Adam has worked in ESG and sustainability for over 30 years (the majority as a chartered environmental and a chartered health and safety specialist). He holds a BSc (Hons) Environmental Science, MA Environmental Law and a PG Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and has worked across industry sectors in over sixty countries worldwide. He has extensive portfolio company level experience (boards and operations, products, and supply chains) and has worked with private equity since the mid-1990s (when a consultant), and in an in-house capacity since 2008.

As one of the first dedicated sustainability leads within mainstream private markets, Adam developed and implemented ESG and sustainability value creation programmes for Doughty Hanson’s private equity buy-out, venture, and real estate portfolios. He left Doughty Hanson in 2016 as Partner to join Coller Capital (global private market secondaries).

As a Partner in the Investment Team (CIO Office), Adam leads ESG and sustainability integration across all Coller Capital products and investment processes (debt, equity, and private wealth). He also provides input to various firm-level corporate sustainability initiatives, and the firm’s wider operational due diligence (ODD), Sharia compliance, and risk-compliance and anti-money laundering (AML) processes.

Specialising in private market secondaries has afforded Adam with extensive wider market experience, notably in supporting institutional investors, portfolio GPs and portfolio level exposures across asset classes, globally.

For the period 1992 and 2008, Adam worked at Halliburton (oil and gas focused multi-national), ERM (global sustainability consultancy), ERM CVS (ISO certification), and at KPMG Europe (sustainability advisory business lead).

Adam is a frequent speaker and contributor to publications on responsible investment, ESG, impact investing and sustainability, and he has delivered training on behalf of Invest Europe, the BVCA, IEMA (ISEP) and various academic institutions (MSc and MBA programmes). He has also played an active and sometimes advisory role for the PRI, ILPA, BVCA, Invest Europe and other investor focused and sustainability focused organisations and initiatives. In October 2024, Adam was inducted on the Real Deals ESG “Hall of Fame” during their awards ceremony, recognised by Real Deals and peers as a leading figure in the industry.
